I suppose the subject says it all... I'm glad Pat reminded me of hiding places. I *knew* that I should check for hiding places, but I thought I'd checked all the possible ones. This time I checked a couple *IM*possible ones... I should have guessed that a cat might find a way into an impossible situation. There she was, in the enclosure that surrounds the utility meters, on a bar about an inch wide, trying to stay dry. I'm glad it wasn't raining harder today; if the lower part of the enclosure had flooded, the least that would have happened is a cold, wet kitty, and I'm going to ignore the worst case scenario.

Thank you to everyone who responded; I might respond to each of you, but *damn* I'm emotionally drained right now.

*huge sighs of cat-finding relief*

Poor Skitty. Also poor you. *pause, puts on the bossy hat* Now go put up a highly noticeable note/reminder that says Lock the damn door, okay? We'll all rest easier.

Barbara, who had a cat escapee of her own this week but just now (before logging in to find out about Skitty) captured the fool cat and scolded him mightily and got a nonchalant eye blink and nose squinch for her trouble. I am too relieved to shake him, but only just. Technically speaking he isn't even our cat, he's one a roomie rescued and neglected to take when he moved out, but we are somewhat fond of the big dope.

Re: posting a note, you know, the funniest thing about this situation was when I first saw that my monitor was missing, I figured that it had to have been knocked on the floor. Once I realized that it was actually missing, my next thought was "But I locked the door, how did they get in?" I had to open the door myself, before I believed that it had been left unlocked.

So, there are now some Animal Farm-like sheep who are continuously chanting "Vertical lock good, horizontal lock bad". (I hope that it is obvious that the latch to the lock is vertical when the lock is engaged, and horizontal when it's not. I might be crazy enough to have chanting sheep to remind me, but I'm not crazy enough to have them chanting senseless things. Then again, maybe it is crazier if I think that sheep can be sensible. ) I don't think that the door has been left unlocked for more than five minutes, total, more than it has had to be unlocked to let me in, or out, for the past several days.

I'm glad that both of our cat mis-adventures ended similarly well. Now, if Skitty would only remember how badly things go when she checks out the 'room' that her people never let her go into....

Oh, thank all the gods and goddessess that look after kitties.

I can stop being all sniffly now, right?

Skritch the kitty for me (if she'll let you near you...)

Yes, you can definitely stop being all sniffly ... although I think a few tears of relief were certainly in order, at least on my part.

And, once Skitty got over her anger with me for the leaky roof, and the mis-set thermostat, I was able to give her many hugs, scratches, and a fair amount of tuna, to celebrate her safe return. (I don't think that she actually understands the notion of "outside". I think that she just figures that there is only a small part of the universe that I can be trusted to keep cat-safe. Hence, the rain and cold were definitely my fault ... but she is the forgiving sort. )

Wow, I just got home. In a selfish kind of way, I'm glad I read this one first, because otherwise I'd've been worried. /Very/ glad she's ok.

My cat's definitely an indoor cat, so, um, yeah, I'd be worried too, in your shoes. In addition to the MINOR little fact that some fucker broke into my house.

Well, believe it or not, once I realized that the door had been left open, the only thing that really bothered me about the break-in was the audacity. I figured that it has to be a kid, or a teenager, who doesn't realize that some long hair loon might kill him. (Not that I would kill someone, but only an idiot (or a young person, still believing in personal immortality) would assume that it's safe to break into an occupied apartment.)

I must admit, I do have visions of starting to guard my unlocked front door from about 4:00 a.m. until I have to leave for work, and, the minute that door opens, prepare to kick the door-opener's ass until it settles between their shoulder blades.

Definitely, Kitten. Especially when you're showing a cat picture that could be Skitty's littermate.

*Huge sigh of relief* I am so glad. I hope the poor Skitty gets over her adventure soon, and I hope you do too. Relax, take care.

Thank you, and I think that the adventure has definitely worn off. In this case, I'll pass on the adventure, even though it didn't "make one late for supper".

Funniest thing... I e-mailed the Sea-pagan mailing list for good wishes, etc., and found her not ten minutes later. Maybe some silicon-vibes were helping? :-)

Yay, indeed... mind, if I'd thought you'd join a search party... well, never mind, I'm about to tell an overcomplicated joke about how I wish I could see you.

Assume flirtatious girlish (well, okay, womanish) giggling on this end :-)

Of course, you are invited to my birthday party. Mind you, the commute's a bitch.

Thank Bast!

Fair enough, but I'm not worried now :-). I'm taking a break from cleaning house, and the task is starting to remind me of a joke I heard about "cleaning the Aegean stables with a whisk broom" (I *do* hope I'm remembering the right stables...). Thank you.
