... I'm sure other people are interested, too.

You know that song in Horton Hatches The Egg?

It really exists. (And yes, the link to the lyrics works.)

I'm sure there are plenty of people who could have told me this. This is hardly news; this is something well known, I'm sure, and many people will say that it was silly to post this given the breadth of knowledge of this fact on the part of so many people.

If so - I have to angrily demand to know why they didn't tell *me*, hm?

Not only did I know it was a real song, but my mom sang it at me. Also "Mairzy Doats."

As rendered in the cartoon, it may have been a subtle jab at singers who couldn't hold their lyric.

John! No one told *me* either! And I'm Swedish. Must call my mother tomorrow and ask why this has never been mentioned in the past. Thanks for the tip. ;)

When I was a little girl, cars didn't come equipped with a radio - you had to pay extra for that, and it was only an AM radio. My family car didn't have one, and we drove back and forth between Long Island (the suburb of NYC where we lived) and Boston (where both my parents were from, and most of my relatives lived) quite often. Before the Interstate Highway System, that was about a six-hour drive. So to keep ourselves amused, we'd sing.

My father seemed to have an endless knowledge of songs from the 40s and even earlier, including all the nonsense songs - "Hut Sut Ralston", "Mairzy Doats", "Fwee Widdle Fishies", "Ashby De La Zouch Castle Abbey", "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" (the Andrews Sisters' version, not the traditional Yiddish song), "K-K-K-Katy", "Yes, We Have No Bananas", "Java Jive", "Rag Mop", "Who Put The Overalls In Mrs. Murphy's Chowder?", "Come On-a My House"...

Anyway, this is why I have a headful of music going back to well before I was born, and can sing along with most of it when I hear it.

*bows head in shame*

I shoulda told you.

Hell, I shoulda sung it to you. (My dad, like Ace's) used to sing these silly songs during the long, long car trips of my childhood...)

Just jumping in for a much-needed checkin on LJ & spotted this. Back to work...
