Big update: I'm moving this weeekend, meaning I'm too busy to update much.

Lesser update: forthedream.com/blogentries. I was going to post a companion piece to it on longhairedweirdo.blogspot.com, but I haven't gotten around to it (or even a square tuit that I can trim into a circle) so I figured it'd be pretty stupid not to say I'm updating the one, just because I haven't updated the other.

Bit of a question...

When is it wise to recognize that you probably have an infection and seek medical care?

Relatively minor TMI:

See, I had this monster zit above and in front of my left ear... the kind you can't help but notice, and touch, and wonder if you should lance it (or do the grosser equivalent). I never did anything, because it never came to enough of a head to lance, and it made me feel ever so mildly nauseous when I futzed with it. Now, I've got a minor earache... the kind where, if I stop and think about it, I can say "Oh, yeah, I've got a bit of an earache." I've also got this funny thing. Ever since my wisdom teeth were pulled, I tend to, every once in a while, get infections (or infected-like feelings) in the sockets from time to time. I've got that, too, only on the bottom left side. (The top doesn't usually get this.) I also have a headache with no cause, whatsoever, except, you know, moving, sleeping on a couch, and so forth.

Now, me, after all the talk about overuse of antibiotics, I'm usually willing to let my immune system battle bacteria. There are times, though, when I wonder if I'm just being overmacho, and I'm someday going to make myself (at best) completely miserable for much longer than I should be not getting antibiotics.

Well... it's time for me to get back to work. Take care, all, and I hope I'll update again on Sunday, from my new place, over a working DSL connection.

Well, for me with the recurrent sinus infections, the answer is "when home remedies don't keep it under control."

I'd suggest at least going to see a doctor; it sounds like something's spreading through your sinuses. (oooh, sinus headaches, *such* fun. not.) Mention that you're concerned about overusing antibiotics, and see what s/he says?

Good luck, and I'm glad to hear the move is going well. (How are Chibi and Skitty handling it?)

take care,

Safe move, k? And I hope you're feeling better shortly.
My wife tells me I don't take medicine anywhere near as much as I should. I dunno if it's a macho thing as I'm not much for machismo, but it is a boneheaded thing. Speaking as a bonehead I can say that.

If you get to the point where you need narcotics for the pain, you've gone to long. I'd say if you're starting to get all that at once, it needs to be looked at.

Hopefully the move isn't making it too much worse.

Check the site, is it red? hot? streaky? If the site has any of the above, get thee to the urgent care. If its sore, it could be that you have an ingrown hair. Mike gets those a lot, they tend to head out to become what looks like a zit, but when its popped, there is a huge twig sticking out of his face. IIRC you are bearded, so that would be one explanation. If its just a big red bump, it could be a boil, in which case, it should be lanced. If you dont feel comfy doing that, to the doc you go.

I am not sure what to tell you about feeling like your sockets from your tooth pull being infected, that would definatly be a see a doc/dentist about because your mouth is already red inside, so how can you tell if the site is red? If you are going to get the other bump looked at, you might as well.

My guess is the sleep deprivation, stress and other insults to your system this week have lowered your resistence a bit. That, all the moving and packing and cleaning has probably stirred up a fair amount of dirt and mold and bacteria and such.

If you're not feeling better tomorrow - or if you show any sign of running a fever (granted, that's kind of hard to tell when it's hot and you're overworking) - you might look around for an urgent care clinic.

Otherwise, since we don't have that teleporter yet: hot compresses on the zit, lots of hand-washing, trying to get a decent meal now and then and a good night's sleep (I know, I know...).

Medical care might be called for in this case. The infection is pretty close to a joint and, if it's staph, you could wind up with something truly vile, such as a bone infection.
