So, I'm a juror on a criminal case. Testimony is done, and now deliberations have started.

Exciting times... for everyone but the alternate.

The worst part of this is, I'm caught by the courts until deliberations are done. As some of you know, I'm hoping to go down to Oregon to intersect with [livejournal.com profile] koriandre... but while I'm okay to go to work tomorrow (if I leave my work number with the court) I'm *not* able to leave town.

And... well, you know, I wouldn't push deliberations. It's a criminal trial; I wouldn't agree with a majority verdict, or push people to make a decision that made them feel uncomfortable. *But*, if I was there, I could be adding my voice, and my reasoning, and listening to what other people saw and heard and moving the process along. I'd be there; I'd have some level of control.

Plus, it's a relatively interesting case. I'd like to be involved in deciding it. (I can't talk about it until the verdict is read, which is a bit frustrating.)

So, I'll go start packing and seeing how the jury decides my fate, indirectly :-).

let me know if/when I need to visit Chibi and Skitty?

car should have been towed out of your lot this a.m. and be at Midas, getting properly repaired, as I type, so I should have it tomorrow no problems... (well, bus ride from downtown to kent, but at least for me it's free...)

just heard. car repairs would cost over $1100. car cannot run without full repairs. book value less than $425.

so, I am now officially carless for the forseeable future.

Beki/Mike et al. will handle the cat-visiting detail; I'll get the key to them.

It was; the case was decided an hour ago, give or take.

I know the feeling. The last time I had jury duty (many years ago, so I'm probably overdue), my pool got picked at the last minute for an juvenile assault case. The testimony lasted an afternoon and then part of the next morning, then delibrations started - and I ended up one of the two alternates. It made for a boring afternoon, although I did get lunch out of the deal; and the period of boredom was relatively short, as the rest of the jury reached a verdict in a few hours.

It is awfully nice of them to let alternates leave the courthouse during deliberations, though.

Hah... they didn't give the jurors lunch; they had to fend for themselves.

Oh, well... at least I get ten dollars a day... *EVERY* day!

But that's over; verdict is in, thank heaven.

Each juror on a criminal case has tremendous amounts of control. The verdict must be unanimous, so it only takes one juror to guarantee a mistrial (which I'd do quite deliberately were I empanelled against my will). I'm glad you've found it interesting, though. :-)

It was; honestly, the puzzling thing was the charges, and the plea, which I'll detail in a later entry.

Hrrm, weird coincidence: I have jury duty on Wednesday (June 29). At work I told them I hoped I got on a big criminal jury, and was sequestered, so I could have a real vacation.
