So, a good book needs a good intro. A famous person's introduction can turn an unknown author's book into a potential best seller. I'm trying to write a book from the heart, one that would convince people to see the political landscape through new eyes. I would really be best off with someone who's out of the political scene.

Does anyone know how I could contact whoever handles communication for former President Carter? Or know how I could start chasing down the information? :-) does his mail still get forwarded from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue? :-)

(Hey, look at the subject line! I *SAID* it was a stupid idea!)

I'd write to the Carter Library in Atlanta. You can send them e-mail at carter.library@nara.gov

Thanks. I've also discovered (don't ask me why I didn't think of this first) that he's had books published, and I know most authors can be written c/o their publishers. There's also the Carter Foundation, which I found off of the library link, so that's another avenue I can try, so thank you again.

Geez, the only way I could have gotten this much information any faster would be to post incorrect information on Usenet :-).

If you write to an author through a publisher, it can take up to a year for them to get the letter. That's one reason authors have websites.

The best way to get in touch with him is through someone who knows him, for what that's worth.

I was figuring on a double-delay, in fact... "publisher to agent, whenever they feel like forwarding mail, then agent to author, whenever the agent feels like forwarding mail"... but if I couldn't find anything else, at least that was a route that I knew would work. It's such a long shot (as if getting the book accepted by a publisher isn't! :-) ) that I wasn't too terribly concerned, but I am glad I have other avenues to pursue.

In addition to the Carter Library, try The Carter Center (http://www.cartercenter.org). Their FAQ includes this:

How can I communicate with President or Mrs. Carter?

All communications with the Carters must be by letter. Note: Emailing scheduling requests or invitations is not acceptable. Invitations for President and/or Mrs. Carter must be sent via the U.S. Postal Service directly to the scheduling office at the following mailing address:

The Carter Center
One Copenhill
453 Freedom Parkway
Atlanta, GA 30307

Try to find out who his publishing agent is - agents are a lot more responsive for their clients than publishers.

Right... that'll teach me not to check names twice. Yes, that's what I meant when I mentioned to Bill about the "Carter Foundation". But thank you, darlin', for finding that link more directly and quickly than I could have.
