So, I found the new office building, found parking (not that easy, let me tell you!) and walked up to my brand new office.

I could tell it was bad news when the door still said "supplies" on it.

I've been moved to a closet.

It's a big closet, though!

Which is why they put three people in it.

I spent most of the day in an ADHD haze, which, really, isn't that surprising.

My monitor is about six inches more than resting-arms' length from my face, there is no room to kick back, no room to spread out, and no desk space not taken up by monitors. I had a two monitor setup, but I think I'll change that... I still won't have any *room* though, because the monitor is too deep and the desk is too small. if I want to take notes, I either need to put a clipboard in my lap, or use the desk surface to the side of the monitor (meaning I have to keep shifting position).

It's the final indignity of this job, and it's too damn much. I'm looking for other work.

That it does.

Interesting thing, though...the more I'm drawing away from this job, the more I'm finding myself fascinated by some tech stuff that I'd been frustrated by, as long as it's not directly work related.

I'm studying Perl, and it's like, "I wonder how to enclose a date in quotes in a text file?" and I don't really want to dig into it... if I did, I'd be adding quotes to the dates in web server logs, and importing them into a database. If I stop and say "but just pretend you had your own webserver. How would you do it?" and suddenly, I'm thinking "Well, if it's positional, I can do (this), otherwise I need to find a regular expression that hits positive only on the first date string...." and it starts to fall into place.

Apparently a bad job attitude is more pervasive than I'd realized. Something i'll have to keep in mind if I'm ever in a management position (which I sincerely hope never happens... but only because I hope to be in another field, soon.)

Thanks; I definitely will. It won't be for Microsoft, (non-compete clauses) but I don't really care. My living expenses are plummeting (one person and two cats instead of two people and three cats), so even if I had to take another paycut I'd be okay.

Yipes, that's even worse than it sounded in your e-mail.

*ineffectual comforting noises*

Paula's right, you know. You do deserve better than this.

Well, at the beginning of the day, the implications hadn't really sunk in. Plus, I hadn't had time to go into a daze yet.

However, yesterday, I finished up the outline of my last two chapters, and, while they still have to be written, I can now outline them. So, I have no further purpose towards keeping a job that's become bad for my health.

Is there any chance this is a breach of OSHA regulations?

I doubt it... I could probably push something through based upon the ADA, but who knows? No, the workplace is safe, at least for my physical health.

It doesn't matter; it's a contract job, I hate the job, I hate the contract I'm working under, and the only issue is that I can't quit, because of the loss of unemployment.

I am quite open about announcing that I'm looking for another job, and I will be asking my boss pointed questions ("Isn't that something you should discuss with my replacement?"), so I can hope that they start interviewing someone else, and decide to get rid of me.

Thank you; I actually knew that this wasn't going to be a very good job for me, but I didn't know how bad it would get. Ah, well... it's good to have the occasional bad job to remind you why you want a better one.

BTDT. Two of us in a tiny little space, hitting each other with our chairs if we both pushed back at the same time, in which I was supposed to interview people! Definitely time to go.

Nod. I suppose if I were doing data entry, I'd suck it up as "one of those things you have to live with when doing scutwork", but damn it all, I'm a semi-respected database administrator!

Comment from my colleague when I told her about this (we're about to be moved in a grand "departmental re-organisation" ourselves) - "is that even legal?"

Date: 2005-04-26 07:07 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] johnpalmer.livejournal.com
Oh, it's legal. If they made stuff like this illegal, it would restrict job growth. After all, people might prefer to have a job, any job, more than they care about working conditions.

I'm either becoming more left-wing or more cynical as time goes on... probably both.
