I suppose he's probably been discredited, nowadays... what kind of Republican could say such a thing?

Nevertheless, I found the quote that best sums up the last chapter of my book (now in the "ready to market to agents" phase):

“Though force can protect in emergency, only justice, fairness, consideration and cooperation can finally lead men to the dawn of eternal peace.”

--Dwight D. Eisenhower

Edited to add: I hope it's implicitly understood that I'm referring to the current leadership, not to the tens of millions of ordinary folks who make up the party as a whole. Call it the neo-cons, if you prefer. Nevertheless, I think if he were to come back from the grave, and say this again, many of the Republican powerbrokers would brand him a whiny liberal.

Eisenhower has long been one of my favorite presidents. When he left the service he was offered the presidential nomination by both parties. He took the Republican nomination to prevent it being offered to Douglas McArthur, since Eisenhower felt that such a presidential contest would be bad for the country. The Democrats weren't about to offer the nomination to McArthur after the way he fell out with Harry Truman.

I think that when the history of the 20th century is written by people who weren't there, Eisenhower will be recognized for his greatness as president. He adroitly kept us out of about three different nuclear wars, and he made it all look easy. At the same time he grew the American economy, promoted social justice, put Earl Warren on the Supreme Court, warned the nation about the Military Industrial complex, and prevented our country from being turned into what he called a 'garrison state.'
