I have a friend here at work who'd like to take a trip to Portland - he has two youngish children (one under 2) and would like to know what to do while down there. Besides hitting Buffalo Wild Wings to score me a lot of wing sauce, I mean.

Anyone out there have any ideas?

The zoo! It's also on the same hill with the Portland Children's Museum so they can do both. Or OMSI is fun, and it's along the river, which is lovely.

Seconding OMSI - a bunch of us went during the Portland C'con Annex, lo these many years ago.

I'd throw a trip to Burgerville in there too. There is one near OMSI.

The Lan Su Chinese Gardens has an exhibit called "Landscape in Miniature" which might interest the kids. IKEA, if they haven't been to one, is amusing ... and tiring (pre-nap trip). The waterfalls at Silve Falls State Park, but involves hiking. The ocean. Russell Street BBQ, which includes vegan BBQ (I've been told it's quite good).

I did some checking recently about kid-friendly restaurants, and wound up learning that there's hardly a restaurant in Portland that *isn't* kid-friendly.

Things kids (and grownups) might especially enjoy, and that don't cost much (besides the Zoo and Omsi, which others have mentioned):

Voodoo Doughnuts (http://voodoodoughnut.com/)
Portland Aerial Tram (http://www.portlandtram.org/) (Kids under 6 ride free!)
Saturday Market (http://www.portlandsaturdaymarket.com/) (which operates on Sundays, too).
Tom McCall Waterfront Park (http://www.portlandonline.com/parks/finder/index.cfm?PropertyID=156&action=ViewPark). Just a really nice park along the Willamette, lots of room for kids to run, and if it's hot, everybody plays in the fountain.
