The good news: as I recalled, placing tomatos in boiling water *does* make them peel easily, but I think you need to peel them right away. It didn't matter, because I was cooking them anyway, but if you wanted raw tomatos, I think you'd need to be more careful.

Oh, right, that's not the *good* news, really, but it is nice. The real good news is that mixing two plum tomatoes with a cup of onion, a cup of lentils, four chunks of garlic, pressed, some olive oil, garam marsala (or however that Indian seasoning is spelled), some ginger, a splash or two of beer (I don't think I really needed that, but hey...) and a little lemon pepper (I decided it needed some lemon, and I only had lemon pepper for lemon bits), simmered in water, makes a tasty little dish.

I think it's probably able to be called "dhal", but I don't know who gets to judge that. Also, I think if I did this again, I'll simmer the tomato, onion, and garlic in olive oil first, then add the (soaking) lentils... or start cooking the lentils and add the mixture later.

The bad news, however...

The last report I've seen is that Bush wants to 'fire' UNMOVIC (I think that's the right initialism). The US will be in charge of inspections. Oh, but there *might* be room for an independent entity to verify the finds *afterwards*.

I don't care how highly one thinks of George Bush... this is *stupid*. Let's assume that GWB is as honest as the day is long; I don't believe that (I don't think any politician is, for that matter), but let's just pretend. It still *screams* "setup!", and it will mean that some folks will *never* have any faith that the weapons that were discovered were posessed by the Iraqis before the war.

There's some doubt about turning Iraq over to the UN afterwards. Personally, I think the UN should get Iraq as soon as feasible; presumably, we did this because the UN made demands that Iraq didn't meet. We didn't do it because we didn't like the government... at least, that's the story that's being told 'officially'. So, I think that we should hand Iraq over to the UN and say "There; that's what you're *supposed* to do to a brutal dictator who's ignoring Security Council resolutions!"

But I understand the mindset that says "the UN had their chance, and they refused to act; this is *our* action, and *we* take responsibility for it!"

But 'firing' the UN weapons inspectors? Declaring that we, who the Arab world has reason to mistrust, are the ones that should be trusted?

I swear... I keep thinking I'm going to find out that the article was a joke, a parody... that's how bad an idea I think it is. I'm thinking like, "no, someone's trying to get us to *think* the administration would do something like this, but *NO ONE* is that short sighted!"

But... http://msnbc.com/news/892816.asp has the story, and MSNBC isn't quite the National Enquirer.

As for the dal

... I've found that caramelizing the onions/garlic first, then adding the tomatoes and letting it continue to simmer while you cook the lentils, makes for an incredible result, which I'm enjoying as leftovers even as I type. (I posted my version to food_porn (http://www.livejournal.com/community/food_porn/98664.html#cutid1) earlier today; great minds - and tummies - think alike.)

As for the war, it gets worse (surprise, surprise). Now the administration is trying to strongarm Syria and Turkey (http://news.independent.co.uk/world/politics/story.jsp?story=392806).

Feh.
