I posted this as a response to someone else's journal, and I think it's the kind of thing that might help other folks. So I edited it slightly, and here it is.

This is a vaguely paraphrased quote from Alan Cole and Chris Bunch's "Sten" series.

"You know what your problem is, Sten? You don't laugh enough."

"What's there to laugh about? I'm up the arse of Vulcan(ed: A giant industrial space station), and everyone I know is trying to kill me!"

"Yep. And it's because the gods hate you. Personally. And what could be funnier than that?"

Sten thought about this and started to laugh.

"You know your other problem Sten? You laugh too much. You're up the arse of Vulcan, and everyone you know is trying to kill you, and here you are yucking it up. I'd be worried if I were you."

And Sten started howling laughter...
(End quote)

I want you to imagine that.

The gods have nothing better to do than fuck with you. They've got an entire universe to play in, and they pick one person - just one! - out of *six billion people* to fuck with. You're so important, so meaningful, so overwhelmingly amusing, that the gods think fucking with your life is the best thing they could do. The gods are into rubber crutch humor, and they think *you're* the person who is the best patsy for their games.

Try to imagine someone else saying the same thing about themselves, if it helps.

And laugh.

Laugh because it's funny, in a darkly humorous way, or laugh because you were just fool enough to believe it for a minute, or laugh because it's your own private joke now... or for whatever reason you feel you should.

Then stop laughing, look despair in the eye, spit in its face, and get back to work. The universe needs you.
