Sep. 2nd, 2005 12:54 pmIn my blog at forthedream.com, I mentioned that, as I was coming of age, Christianity faced its greatest moral challenge of the day: the AIDS epidemic. Here were people who were sick and needed help... ah, but they needed help because of a disease caused by "sinful behavior"... as if Christianity didn't teach that all people were sinners, who fell far short of the message and the mission that Jesus brought to humanity.
Christianity flubbed it, I said, at least here in America.
Well, there's another challenge.
There are people who are actually claiming to be Christians, and spreading scorn for the victims of Katrina.
This is not the greatest moral challenge, by any stretch of the imagination. Nevertheless, the message, and the mission, are clear:
We have neighbors. They need help. If you can help, you help them. End of the story.
Anyone who tries to spin it more than that is not following the message or the mission. Remember the story of judgment day... those who fed the hungry, gave water to the thirsty, clothed the naked, these would be the people judged as righteous.
I, of course, am a Wiccan. There are those who say I have no right to speak about Christianity.
If they also say that there is any Christian duty higher than helping those who need help, let them make both statements to my face. It's been a poor week for me, and by the lord and lady, I could use a good laugh.
