Too many leftovers...

... so I'm forced to have smoked salmon, cream cheese, and onion (with a couple mini heirloom tomatoes from Trader Joe's on the side) on a bagel for breakfast.

And damn it all, I've got to start using up my pork roll[1] more quickly. How will I ever survive?

[1] Pork roll is a sausage (in the same sense that bologna is a sausage, and they're similar in texture, though *not* flavor) that I've only ever found in Philadelphia, though I'm sure it's traveled to other nearby regions, but it never made it as far as, e.g., Columbus OH. Alas, it doesn't keep well, so I have to use up the massive amounts I bought in Philly before the end of this month. It just so happens to be my favorite breakfast meat[2]

[2] Yes, I eat scrapple too. I *did* grow up in Philadelphia, after all. But I suspect that scrapple's what we tell the outsiders about, so they don't come in and buy up all our pork roll.

I do actually have a pound of pork roll in the freezer. But I still have 1.5 pounds to use up.

Funny, I don't remember pork roll from my childhood -- although it may have been, like scrapple, one of those foods that my parents considered too blue-collar to have in the house. (I was given scrapple at friends' houses, or else I'd never have had it.)

If you ever find yourself in Redding, CA, the scrapple at the Country Kitchen is worth the visit -- cooked very crunchy and served (on request) with real maple syrup. Wish I had some right now.

We weren't big on pork roll or any other prepared meats but my first ex-husband introduced me to the joys of Taylor Pork Roll sandwiches on English muffins.

Now I don't eat the stuff because the saultwill make my fingers swell. But I used to love it.

LOL! being a Philly native myself, I appall the natives when i say i never developed a taste for scrapple. and really how does one describe scrapple to a non-Philly native without making it sound disgusting?
