And the Great Upgrade Project is canceled. I don't see any point in going to 32 bit Vista, but if I go to 64 bit, I'll have to re-install all my programs, and that's just too much of a pain right now.

Heh - IMO, you dodged a bullet, John. One of these days, I'll get my Vista laptop flattened and get XP installed. Until then, I'll just bitch about it :)

Oh, but Vista is a wonderful operating system, that's more efficient and less prone to error Yeah, you're probably right, but Vista does, in fact, run really nicely when you've got enough hardware to handle all the bells and whistles.

Oh, sorry about the beginning of this, apparently I'm starting to develop MS instincts :-).

(Hell, I even ended up buying a Zune - mind, at a small employee discount - now that my iPod is annoying due to a coffee spill.)

I *think* Neil Gaiman was the one who commented about upgrading from Vista to XP. :)

Missed it by that much...

John, you've narrowly avoided the bullet that is running Vista. My only advice: remind yourself there is a reasonably well working alternative to Windows: Ubuntu Linux. And, with VMWare player and a little inventive use of the free VM creation websites out there, you can get all the "advantages" of Windows... with the stability of a real operating system. ;-)

Vista's running just fine here on all our machines, but I'd really recommend a clean install, nuke it from orbit, only way to be safe anyway. 64-bit would be nice, but from where you are you'll soon appreciate why the hardware moneyrakers are so bad at creating 64-bit drivers and where is all the 64-bit software that takes advantage of the memory? Photoshop CS4 will finally be 64-bit this year/next year and that should accelerate things but so few software companies have done anything 64-bit yet. but they can't be bothered to improve security by suporting ASLR or complying with limited user rules or doing the other simple things to take advantage of Vista's better security either. bah!

Nod. I've seen that Vista *is* pretty good, so long as your machine is overpowered for it. Mine isn't as over-powered as I'd like, but it will be in the not-too-distant future.

But my "killer app" is Virtual PC... I want that to be 64 bit so I can create multiple virtual machines. There's a lot of playing around I want to do. (This is probably one of the lamest reasons ever for wanting a 64 bit OS, but there it is :-).)
