So, I just told my boss that any competent DBA would be hunting for a job, and gave him some talking points after asking if I could list him as a reference. I didn't quit; I just told him the plain facts.

Now, after being stuck here until 7:00pm with an 'emergency' that was created at 4:00pm, where I had to fix something that I should have known about *months* ago, and could have fixed three weeks ago, when the problem first manifested, had I been told about it, I'm going home, having spent the extra hour composing my e-mail.

I hope I still have a job Monday, but frankly, I stopped caring. If it's supposed to happen, it'll happen.

As much as I hate* to think of the possibility of you being without a job again, darlin', I think this was the right move. If it wakes him up sufficiently to improve things while you're still there, great; if not, well, at least you've warned him.

* Well, except for the potential for some extra time together. I'm greedy that way.

I've had to learn to stop applying logic to IT in corporate America.. the pain it causes my brain makes me miss working retail selling computers to morons...

Thanks; me too. I actually have a lot more confidence this time out than I did... both in my skills as a DBA, and my ability to find something, sooner or later.

Since my paycheck is conspicuously missing from my direct deposit - I don't think there's any relevance, but *damn* is this good evidence that I'm not working for a good company! - I think this is a clear sign that it's time to do something.

Nod. Logic doesn't really enter into it; they've always been a "by the seat of the pants" kind of company. It's just that, now, they seriously deserve to have a large, steel tipped boot applied to the seat of those pants.

Good luck tomorrow. Your boss should get together with my boss sometime to discuss strategies on messing with the data people. Mine once decided to reformat our server hard drive without informing anyone but only backed the shared portion of the server before doing so, and one of my coworkers lost six months work of documents and project data stored in his private portion of the drive. Again, I hope you still have a job tomorrow and that things improve.

Well, I still have a job, probably partly because my boss is on vacation. I suppose that this means I can accomplish something this week.
