Does anyone in LJ-land know of a good drawing tablet for my niece? She's about middle school age. I don't want to buy her a toy, but I also don't think she needs the biggest, bestest, most expensive model either.

Does she have a computer? Then, look at Wacom's tablets. The "bamboo" model runs about $75 on Amazon, I think.

Another vote for the Wacom tablets. I haven't tried the Bamboo line, but I have used a couple of their what-used-to-be-the-lower-end tablets, and they're quite good.

Watching TV tonight I saw an ad for the uDraw game tablet. Versions for Wii, Playstation, X Box and she probably has one of those. Looks very intriguing. Under $50. Google "udraw review". Or go to nick.com and look for the uDraw ad on the right and watch the video.

I ended up getting one of the higher end consumer Wacom tablets. It turns out she's been doing a good bit of art work (and my sister report that she has to stop buying pencils at Staples for artwork - they're okay for *homework*, but not for *drawing*) so my biggest concern went away. (That biggest concern was "let's not buy her a big, expensive toy for something she'll toss aside in a few months." )

Thank you for the suggestion; they're pretty highly recommended, but I was glad to get a more direct "Hey, I know this person!" recommendation too!

Thank you! That's what I ended up getting her. I think I might also do [livejournal.com profile] kightp's suggestion and get her a sketchbook (a high quality, hard covered one). Apparently, she's quite the artist....

Yep, love my Wacom. I use it a lot. Good choice.

Hi

Drawing tablets do not have to be expensive and as a digital artist I use one of the lower priced drawing tablets for my artwork. Artwork that has been published, so the drawing tablets are great with specifications as good as the higher prices drawing tablet. Take a look at this website Drawing Tablet Reviews (http://drawingtabletreviews.com/), which gives some great insight into cheap drawing tablets. They could all be aimed at the young and old alike and the website reviews a Kids Drawing Tablet (http://drawingtabletreviews.com/kids-drawing-tablet-from-genius/),one specifically for children. Great information and worth a look.
