Cultured pearl studs. Always appropriate. The crap from places that cater to 5th graders is likely to cause infections and/or fall apart. Most decent jewelry chains will sell small pearl earrings at a reasonable price. (In fact, a jeweler in the nearby mall is giving them away free just for coming into their store - that's how desperate they are for business.)
