A friend of mine (who I don't believe reads this journal) is working on a sermon about assisted suicide. (She's strongly opposed.)

And there was a moment while reading her entries on the subject that I realized something that seemed worth talking about not-there....

Sometimes it seems to me that there's a goal of being Right. Of making the right decision. Of figuring out the clever way in which people will be wrong.

But there's something equally important, and that's taking a stand, and being willing to be wrong, because if no one takes the stand, then a lot of those clever, right people will end up being wrong, because there's no one who will stand against them, no matter how clever (or nasty, or forceful) they are. And you have to *care* - or you'll just be going through the motions.

There's also a thought that's niggling at the back of my brain - sometimes, you have to take the side where, even if you're wrong, you're wrong only for the reasons that you can be proud of.
