Ya gotta think about it, but...
Jun. 17th, 2004 09:28 pmOkay. Rumsfeld is admitting the US violated the Geneva Convention on prisoners. We held this person without registering him, because he's a member of Ansar al-Islam.
Okay, now, there's some stuff you can understand. Yes, terrorist organizations are not really deserving of Geneva Conventions protections. There are good and valid reasons to deny them Geneva Conventions protections.
But, see, the conventions also state that a neutral body should decide if a person does or doesn't qualify as a POW. Okay, but let's pretend that the Bush team really, honestly, did research this all to hell and back, and are absolutely certain that only the most weak minded and softhearted judge would disagree. Okay.
*HOW DO WE KNOW THIS GUY IS IN ANSAR AL-ISLAM?* US Intelligence? I'm sorry for the profanity, but I wouldn't fucking trust US intelligence to identify a banana, much less "a leader in a terrorist organization"! It doesn't take malice to imagine a potential mistake being made here, and it doesn't take a lot of imagination, either.
There are *good* reasons to have oversight, you know?
