Mar. 17th, 2003 05:40 pmWell... I've been hoping to post an "update on the life of John", and try to get caught up on some vital correspondance... but today, I felt like I had to say something about this war situation.
Are any of you feeling a bit crazy? Are any of you remembering that the last Iraq resolution was passed because the countries that agreed to it considered that it was *not* an authorization for war? That the issue of compliance would come back to the security council?
Well... you're not crazy. It's not exactly fair to make this comparison, but George Bush is engaging in a behavior that's quite common with a certain type of abusive personality.
He's repeating a misrepresentation of what happened, over and over, insisting that it's right, hoping that people will forget that they ever thought differently.
He's claiming authorization under the UN resolution that specifically was intended *not* to give him that authorization.
I've said this before, and I'll say it now: Saddam Hussein does not belong in power. He deserves to be ousted, and possibly tried for crimes against humanity. Hell... you know what I want? I want him before an Islamic court. I would love to have his final humiliation be the repudiation of any claims he made of justification of his actions, through Islam.
I also think it's possible that the only way to secure this would be US military action.
I think that, if the US military removes Saddam from power, at least one good thing will come of this mess.
But there is a right way, and a wrong way, to accomplish these things.
George W. Bush is an arrogant, two-faced, lying sumbitch. (Please note that the contraction is specifically used to avoid actually suggesting that his mother - who I have no opinion of - is a bitch. Still, in insult strength, "you son of a bitch!" is stronger than "you bastard!" in my book, so "sumbitch" seems to work nicely right now.)
I thought, back before I even knew too much about him, that he was a phony. That's the very word I used when mentioning my distaste for him to my mother.
Now, I'm realizing that he's even worse than that.
Keeping in mind that I support the removal of Saddam Hussein from power, I still despise the way George Bush has gone about it. He knew damn well that the other countries considered the resolution a statement of readiness to take action... so he lied to them. He's either lying to us, or bragging about pulling a fast one over the security council, and in any case, he's blaming *them* for holding to an agreement that he himself pushed for.
If you feel you must, support his actions; definitely support the troops who are following lawful orders; feel free to cheer the removal of Saddam Hussein.
But never forget *HOW* this war came about.
