Music

My order from Amazon came in today... a pleasant surprise, since I'd forgotten I'd ordered anything! I'm now listing to School House Rock Rocks... I just finished listening to Saturday Morning Cartoons Greatest Hits. (That, and a converter from S-video to RCA, and I'm happy... I can watch DVDs on TV once again. Alas, my PS2 doesn't do DVDs, so I need to use one of my laptops.)

The music is interesting... some of the songs are true to the original, just bigger-name people doing the music, close to the original, and some of them are completely redone, with the tune just barely recognizable (your best chance to recognize the song is to hear the words). It made think about what it would be like to make that kind of decision. "Here, you get to record the theme song to Underdog" and you have to ponder whether you should give people the nostalgia trip of the song they remember hearing, or whether to play with it just a bit, or whether to completely change it around, keeping just the words (and maybe a hint of the melody from time to time).

I'm of the camp that says for nostalgia's sake, don't mess too much with the original! :)
Although if Bigger-Name wanted to record their own variant *as well*, that could be fun.
School House Rock - ahh, you've triggered some memories this morning.
(wanders off whistling "I'm just a bill, I'm only a bill...")

Oh, yeah... if they'd done two covers of each song, that would have been neat.

I suppose I was a bit lucky because I wasn't all that attached to any of the songs, though I did sometimes want to hear them done "right".

Then again, one was done true to the original, and it was okay, sure, but they could just as easily have played the TV theme, and that was a bit disappointing, too.

Schoolhouse Rock Rocks is one of my all-time favorite albums. I particularly enjoy Blind Melon's "Three Is a Magic Number."

Well, then, I'll have to start listening to that one all night tonight. (I have to listen to a new CD all night once I get it, or I'll forget I own it, and like the songs on it. This makes it *really* ugly when I buy four or five CDs at a time :-) )

But yesterday, I only gave it a single listen, and missed a lot of it while I was cooking and exercising.

But on the plus side, I did hear an excellent remix of Underdog and Popeye the Sailorman.
